PERSONAL REFLECTION 2

PERSONAL REFLECTION 2

The course consisted of so mini useful subjects and materials that help preparing researches, essays and studies. But the most I like was the listening to the presentation and picking up information and building up a background of what I’m looking for. Out lining is another useful way of organizing the information and putting it in the ideal and logical order threw main points and subtitles.

Skills that I learned during the course are writing things based in formal and realistic studies. I learn about in-line citing information that ware written by somebody else as part of respecting Intellectual Property Rights and refer to the site that the information collected from. I learned more about the world wide efforts by international institutions with respect to environmental issues. Concluding the essays with references to refer the reader to the original articles and sits in case he or she is interested in reading more about particle of the subject.

I’m far sure that I will recruit these totally new skills of mine on my future studies, searches and even in my working environment. The way of collecting information about subject from different sources is enriching my background information. Every writer has special way of writing so that I can improve my writing skills and even come up with a unique way of writing by mixing them together.

My biggest challenges in written communication are using more formal way and choosing the right vocab that suite the subjects that I’m writing about or trying to deliver threw my scientific articles. Another challenge is to avoid repetitive info and keeping my writing within the average of word required

The story of consumption

We are all happy when we buy new stuff but we don’t know that there are a lot of victims lying behind our happiness, our own human been, our health and nevertheless our environment. The STORY OF STUFF presented by (LEONARD. 2007) presented the story of consumption starts when the big production businesses race to extract the resources from the environment to start the cycle of production. Toxic materials would be used in the production process .consuming is planned and guided by the production stakeholders based on a quick warn up materials. The tragedy lying behind the mass consuming is the disposal of these consumptions later on. Burying the wastes in big landfills or setting a fire it to reduce its capacity both will leave harmful dioxides in the environment.

Extraction

Nowadays our earth is being attacked by enemies from our own people who are thirsty for richness by the mass extraction of the natural sources. The rapid and unstudied extraction is leading to an environmental crisis and lake of resources to the following generations. The theory of the non-renewable resources or the very long term renewable resources is ignored by those selfish people. Unfortunately, those people sometimes are protected by their own government. The mass extraction leads in turn to a mass production and so on. According to this a national organizational reaction is to be seriously taken against such practices to save the earth. “The reduction of the emissions from deforestation and forest degradation must be based on a mechanism of direct compensation from developed to developing countries, through a sovereign implementation that ensures broad participation of local communities, and a mechanism for monitoring, reporting and verifying that is transparent and public” ( Ayma, 2008). The tragedy is that some developed countries are exploiting the poverty of some 3rd world countries for the extraction, production and even disposal plans without care of their health needs that were a result of the despicable planes.

Production

Production is the second stage of the story of the stuff based on the mass extraction of resources so by turn production will be huge. Lack of government censorship, absence of human and labor rights, poor working conditions, toxic components involved in the production stage generate harmful effects on the public health, environment, labors, consumers and society.Clean production is any practice which eliminates at source the use or formation of hazardous substances through the use of non-hazardous chemicals in production processes”(THORPE, 2009). Production is planned to suite the distribution and consumption stages throw producing respectively fast worn materials to ensure that the production line does not stop. The global industrial race forces the ordinary people especially women of reproductive age to join the industrial faculty as a labors which causes Genetic disease.

Distribution

The distribution stage goal is to keep the sales of the products running by producing poor quality stuff for cheap prices. To insure the highest profit is to reduce cost. People who work in production industries are paying for the cheap stuff we buy by loss of their non-covered health and by joining the toxic conditions in factories that were forced to work in because they have no choice after the extraction of their space. Reaching the goals of this stage will have an impact on the following:

·         Environment: stuff transporting and marketing will increase the usage of fossil energy.

·         Health: the escape from paying the labors health insurance to reduce the costs is effecting there health.

·         Workers: unemployed people how live in urban areas find a difficulties to join the tauten jobs by the big stores that are located far from urban areas to reduce rental costs.

A key strategy businesses use to keep prices down is to externalize costs. That means that the price tags on consumer products don’t capture the true costs of producing and distributing all this stuff “. (LEONARD, 2007)

Consumption

Some governments mainly focusing in increasing their economy by producing goods that worn up quickly, to be replaced and so on and keeping this cycle running in even operation instead of improving the education, health care, researches and other fields of the nation needs. According to THE STORY OF STUFF (2007) consumed goods are divided into two main groups:

1st “planned obsolescence” consumables are mainly made of plastics and metals

2nd “perceived obsolescence” is strategy that used by convincing consumers to get rid of  their good working condition goods by changing its shapes to looks old fashioned or adding a little more performance to attract consumers to buy it. The most efficient way to activate this strategy is throw huge number of advertising.

Every year, you and I pitch some of our money into the shared public account. Our government is supposed to use this money for the public good: public safety, education, environmental protection, and helping those in need. But unfortunately most of the handouts take the form of hidden subsidies – tax breaks, government contracts, access to public land and water ” (LEONARD. 2007).

Disposal

The high rate of goods consuming leads by turn to a bigger amount of disposals there are two main methods of disposing things, filling landfill with garbage and squeezing the amount of garbage to minimum by burning it and barred what lifts from this operation in a land fill. These ways pollute our environment (land, air, water) so climate will be changing accordingly. The horror thing lying behind this is the release of toxins contamination that ware contaminated in the production stage. Recycling is useful, but will not be the only solution for this problem. Global organizational co-operation will play a main rule by forcing the governments to involve a restriction laws.

Consumerism in the UAE

Consumerism in the UAE has changed to a better situation in the last 5 years. The government in the UAE was affected by the global awareness regarding the environment and the climate changing on our planet. Several resolutions have been taken by the government as a part of the response to the global awareness, such as Consumer Protection Department under the leadership of the Department of Economic Development (DED), in Dubai throws its web (www.consumerrights .ae).”In other words, the book will serve as a constitution outlining the rights and guidelines for both retailers and consumers” (Todd, 2011). This soon leaded to establish a site to receive complaints from consumers in Abu Dhabi (www.abudhabi.ae). The huge solar energy projects managed by MASDAR CITY owned by Abu Dhabi government are another alternative example of harmful fossils energy.

Conclusion

I believe that the future of our planet and its resources’ sustainability is on everybody’s’ shoulder’s. Global response is to take place very soon to save as much environmental life as possible .global warming and its associated natural crises are threatening the next generations. Third World countries must be developed to catch up with the global development of civilization. The people have to defend their societies from the unjust mass extraction and to force their government to take firm decisions in this regard.

Students in schools are to be taught the rationalization in the consumption of energy and natural resources. Research and studies that would raise the level of benefit of recycling are to be strongly supported as well as to search for new alternatives that have less impact on wildlife on Earth.

Solar power

Getting the solar energy directly from sunlight using photovoltaic technology is the best and respectively cheap affording growing energy needs of the world with a renewable resource while reducing the harm effects on the environment by reducing hydrocarbon effects on atmosphere.

Solar Photovoltaic Technology

Solar photovoltaic is based on converting sun light to electricity by getting its solar particles by using photovoltaic cell and storing it so it can be useful in the night time.

Concentrated PV (CSP) Systems

Concentrated PV (CSP) systems concentrate sunlight and reflect these concentrated sunlight cells that by turn it converts it to a useful energy. The CSP systems is based on collecting the concentrated light from lens or mirrors and focus it onto the cells. Advantages of CSP systems are efficiency and low cost.

Solar power applications

1.    Power stations

2.    In buildings

3.    In transport

4.    Standalone devices

5.    Rural electrification

6.    Solar roadways

7.    Solar Power satellites

Solar technologies were used by ancient people for warming and water heating

The early history of the development of solar powers started in 1860s at the time that coal expected to be run out but the development of solar technologies systems take place in the beginning of 20th century. Commercial CSP plants were first developed in the 1980s and located in the Mojave Desert in California. The Sarnia PV system in Canada is the largest photovoltaic (PV) in the world in 2011.

The MENA (Middle East- North Africa) region have the a nature ability to provide more than 3 times the world’s power needs, according to some studies.

Masdar established in 2006 by Abu Dhabi government to meet the future renewable energy needs of the Middle East countries and to be the leader in this field.

Masdar will contribute significantly to this diversification in many ways. Across its Departments, the company will improve:

·         Share the market by Increase the export base.

·         Encourage private investors to invest in this field.

·         Invest in support education, research and innovation.

·         Train, attract and retain skilled workers in knowledge-based sectors.

·         Encourage investment in areas that generate intellectual property gains.

·         Support and diversify the economic growth.

·         Train, and import skilled workers in knowledge-based fields.

"We are delighted to collaborate with Masdar, a wholly owned company of the government of Abu Dhabi through the Mubadala Development Company, and Enviromena on the development of this landmark solar project in the Middle East," Newswire, A. P. (2009, January 19).

Nowadays the use of solar energy resource represents less than 1% of the total electricity

production from renewable sources.

Next generations are to be aware of the harm full of the hydrocarbon products, And to increase the usage of renewable non harm to environment energy sources.

Supporting the government vision of solar power future is everybody’ responsibility.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

In this assay I’d like to outline three main points regarding the subject.

Firstly our teacher who was really co-operative with all of us. He is smart especially in problem solving and delivering the info and the learning materials to the students. I like his accent, his clear voice too. He repeats the information so many times so by that he makes sure that every body understands the subjects. What I like most about him that he take care of individuals.

Secondly the subject is a real chance to learn new things a bout different ways of communication life on the internet for example blogger and bibme are a totally new experience of mine. And what are more important than that are the searching methods and the way of referencing. Summarizing and Reformulating of articles on our own way is a real challenge.

Thirdly I read so many new articles during the classes, even things a bout my own region that I hasn’t knew about such as ALAssas hoarse riders in RAK, the wild saving programs that funded by Abu Dhabi government (Houbara bustards) and running projects around the UAE such as MASDAR’s wind power. I learnt a huge number of new vocabularies in relatively short period. My grammar improved as well as my writing skills. Traveling between web sites to find specific information for a subject enriched my background.

I strongly believe that the above deliverables will help me in my resent studies, future researches and even writing reports during my daily routine at work.

Solar power in the UAE, Where to?

Solar panels are used in small amount in UAE. Solar products’ market is accordingly small so that dealers export it to Africa & Afghanistan. People in Dubai who are interested in solar energy can use photovoltage, but there is no official policy. The time to collect the solar energy in UAE is longer than Europe. The use of solar power will improve the national economy of the UAE. The benefits of the solar energy are worthy and healthy. With proper technology these alternative resources should become cheap and readily available for consumers”. (John, S. 2005) Using alternative energy resources reduces pollution. Governmental action has to be taken to support the usage of solar power.

Houbara Bustards

A programe to protect houbara from extinction in North Africa covered by Abu Dhabi Government. An international fund for the programme started in 2006 and covering many centers Asia and Africa. The Morocco center is planning to release a number of 15,000 houbara’s each season. Spring is the main season for breading houbara’s. Houbara’s are released in two main areas in Morocco’s wild just when they are under 9 months old. 65% of the birds survive after a year of release. The birds released are monitored by scientists. “One of the keys of success is the reproduction of the captive birds.” Said Mr. Lieeron. (Todorova,2011). The density of houbara’s in the wild has increased 10 times and this reflects the success of the pant.
